Term: Credit Card Payment Gateway
Credit card payment gateways integrate directly into ecommerce websites allowing payments to be processed without having customers directed to outside pages. As the ecommerce equivalent of the typical POS terminal, the payment gateway authorizes payments while protecting sensitive cardholder data. Within 2-3 seconds transaction information is passed through the payment gateway, on to the issuing bank for approval and then back to the gateway with an authorized or declined response. Payments processed with an online payment gateway are considered to be card not present transactions. Due to the higher risk of fraud when physical cards are not present during the transaction, payment gateways use CVV2, AVS and other fraud prevention tools to reduce unauthorized credit card use.
